David Lewis

The Lewis Podcast is a series focused on Science, Health, and Wellness topics that are particularly relevant to teens.  My goal is to expose teens to different lifestyles with an emphasis on improving one’s physical, spiritual and mental health through nutrition, exercise and spiritual practices.  In addition, the Podcast will also cover valuable scientific topics. My hope is that by reaching teens while they are young we will be able to make a difference by helping them live healthy lives as well as educate them to make choices that have a positive impact on the environment and society.

David Lewis interviews Mrs. Robyn Kaminer

During the first episode of the Lewis Podcast, David Lewis interviews Mrs. Robyn Kaminer, the Rye High School health teacher to discuss the ever-present issue of stress. Mrs. Kaminer highlights the differences between eustress vs distress, as well as healthy vs unhealthy coping mechanisms including strategies for coping under periods of stress.

David Lewis talks with Lodro Rinzler the Co-founder of MNDFL Meditation and the award-winning author of six books including The Buddha Walks into a Bar and Love Hurts. He has taught meditation for eighteen years in the Buddhist tradition. Lodro Rinzler travels frequently for his books, and has spoken across the world at conferences, universities, and businesses as diverse as Google, Harvard University and the White House.  Named one of 50 Innovators Shaping the Future of Wellness by SONIMA,  Rinzler’s work has been featured in The New York Times,The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic and on FOX, CBS, and NBC. He lives in New York City with his wife Adreanna and a menagerie of small animals.

David Lewis interviews Dr. Suzana J. Camargo who is a Lamont Research Professor at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. She has been at Lamont campus since 1999, working first at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society before becoming part of the Ocean and Climate Physics Division of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in 2007.  Dr. Camargo has published more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals on various aspects of climate, in particular the relationship of tropical cyclones and climate in various time-scales. During February 2015, Dr. Camargo also became the executive director of the Columbia University Initiative on Extreme Weather and Climate.

David Lewis speaks with Dr. Kimberly Rogers who is a board certified internist, who practices outpatient primary care medicine. She obtained her MD from Jefferson Medical college in 2011,  and completed training in internal medicine at Temple University hospital in 2014. She is a member of the American College of Physicians, American College of Lifestyle Medicine and Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine.  She currently practices in Philadelphia, PA providing primary care services with a strong focus on prevention and nutrition.

David Lewis interviews Dr, David Lewis who was awarded a First Class Honours degree from the University of Westminster and a doctorate from the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex. He is the founder and company chairman of the research lab, Mindlab International, now based at the University of Sussex.  His early research included the neuropsychology of stress, anxiety and phobias and he has a continued interest in the altered state of consciousness. His research on the correlation between brain activity and consumer behavior led him to be dubbed as “the father of neuromarketing.”  Dr. Lewis has also published several books, including “Impulse-Why We Do What We Do Without Knowing Why We Do It” and “Time Hacks.”

David Lewis interviews Dr. Elyse Sussman who is a Professor in the Departments of Neuroscience and Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She was trained in the area of cognitive neuroscience. Dr. Sussman studies a crucial skill of human hearing called auditory scene perception that allows us to follow a single voice in a crowded room or to listen to the melody of the flute within an orchestra. Her research focuses on how these complex perceptual abilities develop from childhood and how attention modifies what we perceive.

David Lewis talks with Dr. Daniel Cohen who is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. He received a bachelor of arts degree with honors from Cornell University, where he majored in biology with a concentration in anatomy and physiology. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was awarded his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his post-graduate training as an intern and resident at Babies and Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian.

David Lewis interviews Dr. Karen Tizer who received her medical degree in Philadelphia and completed her pediatric residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center as well as a pediatric infectious disease fellowship at Cornell Medical School. Dr. Tizer worked at Kings County Medical Center in Pediatrics for eighteen years and has been working at Montefiore Medical Center also in Pediatrics for the past seven years.

David Lewis speaks with Victoria Da Poian, an aerospace engineer who works at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Ms. Da Poian attended ISAE-Supaero, the top French Engineering school for Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, after preparatory classes, where she received her Master of Sciences. She uses computational and machine learning techniques to develop science autonomy for planetary science missions such as the ExoMars mission (launched to Mars in 2022) and also for the detection of life in astrobiology and solar system exploration. Her main research interests are the use of multidisciplinary approaches to help develop a better understanding of life and habitable planetary environments as well as the design and conception of advanced instruments for exploration manned or unmanned missions.

David Lewis speaks with Dr. Janet Gibson who is a professor of psychology at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa.  She is a cognitive psychologist who studies memory and thinking, and for the past five years has studied the psychology of humor. In 2019, she published an undergraduate textbook, An Introduction to the Psychology of Humor.  Recently Dr.Gibson published a short online article that summarized some of the health benefits--physical and psychological--gained from using humor and laughter, which we discussed during this podcast.

David Lewis speaks with Andy Short. Mr. Short has spent his career working on innovative solutions for addiction recovery. Currently he is the Program Manager of The Phoenix LA- a nonprofit that creates a sober active community free for people in recovery. As a gay man in recovery from addiction Andy understands how personal narrative and mission can combine to create change in relationships and community. This is the defining theme of his work and career. He is a 2019 recipient of Wayside Youth Coalition's Community Spirit award and the winner of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network's 2019 Excellence Award in the Young Professional category. Andy currently lives in DTLA with his coffee maker and bicycle.
